When we moved into our new house, we upgraded Annabelle from a toddler bed to a queen size bed. We’ve had quite a few questions since as to why our four year old has a bigger size bed than most teens. Giving your child a queen size bed isn’t so crazy if you need a place for guests to sleep, right? These are the practical reasons why your toddler needs a queen size bed and why Annabelle sleeps like a Queen.
The first reason why my toddler has a queen size bed is we had to use our new queen mattress. When we were presented with an opportunity for a new queen mattress, we could not turn it down. Annabelle then became the proud new owner of a bed fit for a queen.
A Queen ‘Toddler’ Bed Last Forever
The second reason we have a queen size ‘toddler’ bed is so we don’t have to buy another kid size bed when she gets bigger. We are happy to upgrade her from a tiny toddler bed to a kids queen size bed if she is able to sleep in it throughout high school. We know we won’t need to ever buy a bed for Annabelle again.
A Queen Bed makes a great Guest Bed
The third reason why my toddler has a queen size bed is we needed a place for guests to sleep in our new home. When we combined the third and fourth bedrooms in our house to make a large master bedroom, it took away a guest bedroom. We have a number of family and friends who live out of state and need a proper place to sleep when they visit. Annabelle’s bedroom doubles as a guest room now. When we have visitors, Annabelle happily sleeps in her sister’s room on a portable toddler bed.
How to Keep a Toddler Safe in a Queen Size Bed
If Annabelle has a friend stay the night that’s never been in a large bed before, we know she’s safe. We feel comfort knowing the girls won’t end up on the floor with a bed rail in place. The Regalo Bed Rail conveniently swings down and out of our way when needed, and also slides under the mattress to be hidden when we don’t need it.
Annabelle is still small and we make sure the queen size bed is safe for our little girl. To ensure her safety, we installed a swing down bed rail that protects her from rolling out of bed in the middle of the night. This bed rail is perfect when Annabelle and Ailey have sleepovers. I highly recommend purchasing it!
If you’re considering a bigger bed for your toddler, make sure you add a bed rail for safety.
The extra long My Cot by Regalo is comfy, cozy, and convenient. If we have someone staying the night in Annabelle’s bed, she isn’t forced to sleep on the floor (or with us). Instead, she has her own place to lay her head on the My Cot. The sisters love being able to sleep in the same room together in their beds.
The Toddler Portable Cot
We love the extra-long My Cot because it folds up and stores easily. When our guests leave, we keep the My Cot in the linen closet. We can also bring Annabelle’s My Toddler Portable Cot anywhere. When we travel to Ohio for Thanksgiving and stay in a hotel room, Annabelle can bring along her own comfortable place to sleep and play.
The Toddler My Cot comes in at 54” long (perfect for a growing toddler). It can hold children up to 80 pounds, making it ideal for children 2-8 years old. It is made of steel, built with durability, safety and convenience in mind. There is a sturdy canvas material lining the cot for safety as well.
If you’re interested in a Bed Rail or My Cot for your toddler, check out the numerous options from Regalo. The Bed Rails come in a variety of styles and My Cot, the portable toddler made, is made in different colors and lengths.

We are going to update our Queen to a King and give our Queen to our daughter. She is currently 1.5years old and will be moved over in about 1 more year (we have another baby on the way so she will be in a bassinet/playpen in our room until she’s ready to go to our daughter crib. My daughter will be just over 2 when we move her out of the crib to the bed. Do you think that’s too young? I’d hate to invest in a toddler bed just to move her to a queen a year later. We were thinking of putting the mattress straight on the floor at first in case of falls, and a pool noodle under her sheet.

Hi. I found your sight by also seeing if others are doing this for their small kids. Our daughter is 16 months and we also had bought a Cal-king mattress but wanted to keep our queen for her and guests. She had been co-sleeping with us and it just wasn’t working out, she’s too noisy, too clingy, we needed to find a way to quit nursing. So she gets her own room. Our bed frame is low to the ground, and I use a maternity pillow under the sheet to keep her in bed, like a big dock-a-tot. I hope to be able to have her sleeping through the night soon so I can be in my own room. Thanks.

Thanks for this post! This is exactly why I want to give my almost 4 year old a queen bed. We moved a few months ago to a 3 bedroom house. Master, son’s room, and guest room. But now I’m pregnant and I really need a space for a crib and baby things. My husband is really stuck on keeping a guest room and wants to just put the crib in the guest room but I figured it made more sense to just have my son give up the queen when we have guests and he’ll bunk in his little sister’s room.
