Most parents’ mornings are chaotic, messy, and usually a blur. The only expectation for most parents is to be able to drink a cup of coffee.
What are most parents’ mornings like?
The movies and television make a school/work day morning seem so wonderful as the family all sits down to enjoy a beautiful breakfast and discuss their plans for the day. The truth is – mornings are never magical in my household, unless it is a Sunday and we’ve bribed the girls. Our only expectation for the morning is that we get to drink is a hot cup of coffee.
Not many couples who are expecting a baby, have young children, or anticipating having kids in the future realize what a morning is like in a house with little ones. Want to know the truth? A morning in the life of parents is chaotic, rushed, messy, and usually a blur, fueled by a mug of coffee!
The majority of many parents’ mornings begin way too early.
Our youngest, Ailey, wakes whenever she sees fit, whether or not the sun has risen. Upon waking, she requests juice, food, tv, toys – you name it, she wants it. While I tend to Ailey, my husband jumps in the shower for work. I usually start to check emails and reply to social media messages as soon as Ailey seems occupied.
In the real world, Moms and Dads don’t have time to talk over their coffee, read the newspaper, cuddle in the kitchen, or give long kisses goodbye. There are few mornings where I sneak in a hug while my husband drinks from my coffee cup before running out the door.
Most mornings, our oldest, Annabelle, doesn’t wake up before Daddy leaves and by the time she tiptoes downstairs, he is already on the train to work. In an ideal world, my daughters would be excited to see each other at the start of a new day. Many times there are whines from either party and I have to keep them in separate rooms until they’ve eaten breakfast and wiped the sleepy out of their eyes. Unless I let them watch a t.v. show.

Annabelle goes to Pre-K three days a week and school days are usually the most chaotic. I juggle making lunch, dressing three girls (myself included), breaking up sister fights, and sipping a cup of coffee before it gets cold. In my life, there is not much time to brew a pot of coffee while dancing around the kitchen as I whip up chocolate chip pancakes, bacon and eggs like in the movies. In our house, all we have time to do is throw a coffee pod in the coffee maker, pour a bowl of cereal, and catch up between sips and bites!
I love showing you all what life is really like because not everything is as perfect as it seems to be. There are mornings where I don’t even get to see my husband, let alone give him a peck on the cheek before he runs to catch the train. Sometimes I forget to eat breakfast and often times I let my daughters watch too much t.v. One thing is for sure though, I always make sure I have a cup (or five) of coffee!

Hmm, I wonder if I would like these. Are they sweetened? I like flavored coffees, but I’ve always found flavored creamers to be really sweet. Our mornings are a lot like yours… we all have to be dressed and out the door and a lot of days we don’t get enough time with one another. I keep hoping someday it’ll be like the movies, even just a little bit. I’d settle for getting to sleep in on the weekends though… a girl can dream.

Yep, when I was a kid it was always rushing around the house before school and we all ate at different times and got dressed and fought. Luckily right now I don’t have to worry about any of that. I just get up and start working. But I’m sure one day I’ll be scrambling to get everyone ready for their day. Except I’ll have some hot chocolate instead of coffee, haha

You are so right! One of the first things I learned as an adult is mornings are not how they look in the movies. I don’t even have kids and mornings are so crazy here too! Fighting for bathrooms, and quick breakfasts!

Yuuuup mornings with kids are chaotic! And they move at the speed of a turtle when you’re trying to get them dressed and out the door ?
