As we close out the month I am checking in with a life lately in August 2021 update. From home projects to pregnancy, travel to motherhood, here is a bit of what’s been going on in the Houston household.
Summer 2021 Recap
This summer we took two fun trips to the south to visit Brandon’s family and one vacation to Cape Cod. We didn’t go to the beach as much as I had hoped due to the extreme heat, nor did I venture to our neighborhood pool. Pregnancy kicked my butt most days, so I preferred to be inside with the air conditioning. The girls enjoyed going to dance camp, meeting a new babysitter, and playing together A LOT. I believe this summer brought the sisters even closer together than they were before (if possible).
There is only one week left of summer vacation for Annabelle and she is so ready to go back to school. We bought a new backpack and lunchbox, some school clothes, and a raincoat! The town hasn’t assigned teachers yet, so we are holding off on school supplies until we know what to buy for second grade.
Ailey’s pre-K program doesn’t begin until September 8; I know it’s going to be difficult on her when Annabelle starts school. The sisters have spent every day together this summer!
I snuck away last weekend for the night to Newport, Rhode Island to celebrate my sister’s sister-in-law’s bachelorette party. It was definitely interesting being the only pregnant one in the group, but we had a great time! Planning a bachelorette trip to Newport? I highly recommend checking out The Landing for great drinks + dancing outside by the waterfront.
Life Lately – House Projects // August 2021
Over the last four months our basement has gone through quite the renovation. We always wanted to finish one side of the basement to create a living area, but we did a bit more than planned. Our basement not only has a family room, but also small office and laundry room!
Aside from a plumbing issue that led to a disastrous flooding event on the unfinished side, we didn’t run into many issues during the renovation. I’ll be sharing a complete renovation post with details once it’s 100% done. We have a few custom furniture pieces in the works, a wine fridge to order, and televisions to mount. For now, take a peek at some before and after photos of our basement.
I hinted at a few more household projects in the works over on my IG stories. This fall we have a lot on our list before the baby arrives before Christmas. Here is what we are hoping to accomplish first: an accent wall in our bedroom and a bedroom makeover for the sisters.
Life Lately – Pregnancy Weeks 22-25
It’s wild how quickly your body can change when you’re pregnant over just a few weeks. Looking back at photos of my first and second pregnancies, I always seem to pop around the six month mark.
I had a lot of round ligament pains since the start of August, so it makes sense now my baby bump is much more prominent. Growth is expected during pregnancy, but whether it happens fast or slow can be surprising.

I am beginning to worry a little bit about Ailey and adjusting to a new baby in the family. On the average day, she is totally fine with having a baby sister. But every once in awhile she tells me she doesn’t want to share me with anyone else (aside from Annabelle). It’s obviously going to be a tricky transition, going from youngest to middle child, but we will do our best to make sure Aileys feels loved and safe when it happens.
Life Lately – Recipes
This month I learned my social media followers love a quick and easy recipe. Sometimes I share photos of dinner in my stories and someone will ask for the recipe. I rarely follow a recipe when cooking, so it can be hard to share my way of coming up with the dish. Here are a few recipes I shared on Instagram from our life lately.
Summertime is usually a lot of easy meals, take-out or dining out. However I have been cooking more now that I’m not exhausted from pregnancy in the evenings. I have to admit all of this cooking has me very excited for fall recipes. Annabelle is already asking when we can make chili – but I like to wait until it isn’t 90 degrees outside.
Speaking of fall, I’m beyond excited to stow away all of my summer clothes. Or the summer clothes I was actually able to wear… this season I had to buy a lot of dresses to accomodate a baby bump and compression shorts. My sister passed along the maternity overalls I bought her for her birthday two years ago just in time for fall. Overalls may be a fall wardrobe staple as they are easy to wear and hide pelvic support shorts well. These overalls are on sale for $17!
The girls are calling me, “Farmer Mom” but I can handle it.
