It’s August. It’s hot. We’re tired. The last thing I want to do is stand over a stove or plan an elaborate dinner. If you’re also a mom running on snacks and sunscreen, you’re not alone.
This time of year calls for lazy mom meals—no cooking, minimal cleanup, and maximum kid approval. From snack plates to fake-it-til-you-make-it dinners, here are my go-to ideas for feeding the family without losing your sanity.
15 Lazy Mom Meal Ideas to Survive the August Heat
To me, lazy dinners are part of embracing a slower August and finding joy in the everyday. I do love cooking, but not every day of the week. Here are 15 lazy mom meals to make for your family.
1. Snack Plates
There is no rule that dinner must be cooked to be complete. With kids in different phases of life (and taste preferences), sometimes a snack plate is the only thing that works. If you’re also juggling big age gaps, you’ll relate to this post on navigating motherhood with three kids.
- Ideas for your snack plate:
- Cheese, crackers, fruit, nuts
- Rotisserie chicken or deli meat, cut up bread, condiments
- Hummus + veggies + pita
- Chips, salsa, guacamole
- Tip: Add a few hard-boiled eggs with salt, pepper, + everything but the bagel seasoning
- Mom tip: Make a snack plate on a baking sheet layered with parchment or snackle box for easy serving and cleanup.
2. No-Cook Sandwich Nights
Some nights, a cold sandwich is all you need. These are a few of our summer favorites—bonus points if you serve them with a side of chips or watermelon. Check out 25 of the best sandwiches for ideas.
- Chicken Caesar Wrap – rotisserie chicken, Caesar dressing, lettuce, shredded Parmesan
- Italian – Salami, Italian dressing, olives
- Caprese Sandwich – fresh mozzarella, sliced tomato, pesto on crusty bread
- Turkey, cucumber, lettuce, mayo
- Ham, cheese, pickles, mustard
- Peanut butter, jelly, and fluff
3. Breakfast for Dinner (Brinner)
Brinner because it’s fun, fast, and always a win.
- Cheese omelettes + frozen breakfast sausage + toast
- Pancakes or waffles (bonus if frozen) with whipped cream and fruit
- Breakfast burritos (eggs, cheese, cooked peppers, leftover potatoes, meat, etc)
- Yogurt parfait bar for the kids
4. 5-Ingredient “Fake” Dinners
These are what I call “fake dinners” because they feel homemade—but they’re barely cooked. Five ingredients or fewer, and you’re done.
- Pasta + butter + parmesan + frozen peas
- Frozen ravioli + jarred sauce + side salad
- Quesadillas with black beans + cheese + avocado
- Store-bought gnocchi + jarred pesto + rotisserie chicken
5. Freezer + Shortcut Favorites
Don’t sleep on the power of frozen and pre-made meals. I always have items in my freezer that can be thrown together to make an easy meal.
- Frozen pizzas with extra toppings and a bag salad
- Trader Joe’s chicken cutlets + frozen/instant mashed potatoes with a vegetable
- Chicken nuggets with air fryer sweet potato fries or tater tots
- Trader’s Joe’s frozen jasmine rice + mixed vegetables + edamame + soy sauce
Whether it’s snack plates or breakfast for dinner, lazy mom meals are a form of self-care. You don’t have to cook a perfect meal to feed your family well. Give yourself permission to take the easy route—you’ve earned it.
