Holiday family photos are an annual tradition. Whether you want to use a family photo for a holiday card or update your own pictures, now is the time to plan your family photos! Here are our favorite indoor and outdoor holiday family photos to use as inspiration for your family photo session.
Holiday Family Photo Inspiration
Why do you take family photos?
Our family takes professional holiday photos every November to use for Christmas cards, create gifts for family, and to hang in our home. I love to capture how our family has grown and changed over a year.
I enjoy planning outfits for family photos and choosing a new location for the photo shoot every year. We have taken our holiday photos in various local parks, in our home, and even at a farm. We usually hire a professional photographer, but once asked a friend to take our family photos too (see how to do this here).
How to Find Holiday Family Photo Inspiration
Each year we try to take a different style holiday photo, but it can be stressful to think of new ways to capture your family. Our photographer is always helpful and creative!
Shopping for holiday photo props is lots of fun whether you visit a store or look right in the decoration boxes in your home. Props add another level to a holiday family photo session and can entertain little kids.
Looking for photo prop suggestions? Try using a plaid blanket, hot chocolate mugs, a letter board, festive garland, a Santa Sack, a teepee, or even an artificial Christmas tree in your family photos!
At Home Christmas Family Photos: Baking Christmas Cookies
While it may seem intimidating, taking family photos at home is actually fun! Sometimes children are most comfortable in their own familiar surroundings. We invited our photographer take photos of my family making our annual Christmas cookies. She stayed out of the way while we did our thing, but snapped all of these lovely moments I will cherish forever.
Here is a peek at our Christmas family photos over the years (as well as holiday family picture inspiration from Pinterest).

We always do photo Christmas cards. I love sending them out and getting them from other people. Can’t wait to see yours.

Just love the bridge image! It is my inspiration for our own family pics this holiday season. I plan & plan every year with great intentions to do my family’s holiday photo cards, but never can seem to find the time. I am determined this year! I have the location picked & will order my own family’s when I order for my clients after holiday mini sessions are finished! Hope you were able to do yours this year!
Merry Christmas!

Really helpful ideas! I loved all of the photos. I like that your outfits match, but they are not identical.
