There’s something magical about a fall family photo session on the beach – especially on Cape Cod. Some say the best time to visit Cape Cod is during the fall. However, a fall family photo session on the Cape Cod Beach involves time, money, travel and my family – which is not always readily available. Last month my dream came to fruition when I coordinated a family photo session on the beach in Chatham with an up-and-coming photographer: myself.
Fall Family Photo Session on the Cape Cod Beach
In October we were extremely fortunate to be invited to stay on the Cape for a few days. As luck would have it, not only was our rental home located up the street from the beach, but the weather was perfect. If there was a way to clone myself then I could be in all of our family photos at the same time as I was behind the lens – but we all know that’s impossible. Thankfully my Mom was in attendance and knows enough about my camera and taking 100 snaps to get one good photo.
What do you wear for fall family photos on the beach?
Before our trip I ransacked our closets for outfits that would complement one another and the fall-beach setting. Black, brown, tan and dark denim is a favorable color combination for fall family photos. I’m happy I randomly bought myself a brown sweater/skirt dress from Marshalls in September that I thought I’d never wear. Another random purchase that worked out in the end: three matching black floral dresses on J.Crew clearance. My husband wore a tan sweater, dark denim, and brown boots. My Mom wore a black velvet set and black velvet shoes.
Tips for Taking Your Own Family Photos
- Let go of the idea of PERFECTION – it doesn’t exist
- Capture “the moment” and not an “ideal memory”
- Take 1,000,000 photos – ONE will be so great it makes the entire process worth it. I promise
- If children are involved – let them be children. Run, laugh, play, pout, etc. Some of my favorite photos are the ones where Arbor is pouting.
- Have fun.
