I have loved to read for as long as I can remember, so much that I went to college for English literature and taught elementary school children how to read for five years. Now that I am a Mom of two, I want to instill my love of reading in my children. Encouraging a love of reading early on in life is so important. They say children are made readers in the laps of their parents, so I started when they were in my belly.
We read books in our home all day long. More often than not, my daughters have books at their breakfast table in the morning. We visit the library weekly and they also have their own bookcases filled with colorful stories and whimsical tales.
How I Encourage My Daughters to Love Reading
I love to read to my daughters just as much as when they read to me. I have always believed its important my daughters see me reading on my own. Children mimic their parents and reading is a behavior I want them to copy, so I read a lot. (It helps that it is my favorite hobby!).
Literacy is a skill that’s very important to my children’s development. Literacy is not about being able to read, though. Literacy is appreciating a book from cover to cover, the ability to tell a story from looking at pictures, and understanding print around you in your community. We read books of all genres – fiction, non-fiction, poetry, etc. By familiarizing my children with reading a variety of books at an early age, I’m exposing them to a whole new world. My daughters’ wild imaginations and magical spirits, as well as their worldly knowledge of, have only grown from the books we read together.
I usually find my daughters snacking while they’re looking through a book together. When stocking up on snacks at Target by Kelloggs’ for reading time, as well as back to school lunches, I have been saving my receipts, so we can get free books for the girls’ libraries or their school classroom!
Did you know Kellogg’s and Scholastic have teamed up to encourage reading with a free book program?
1 Box = 1 FREE Book
All you have to do is buy any participating Kelloggs’s product by 9/30/18, take a picture of your receipts with qualifying purchases, register for Kellogg’s Family Rewards® below and upload your receipt. Each receipt must be submitted separately and within 30 days of purchase. Finally, you’ll get credit to redeem for a book of your choice to keep or donate to a local school.
There are quite a number of Kellogg’s products available with the promotion, including Pringles, Cheez-Its, Fruit Snacks, Nutri-Grain, Townhouse Crackers, and more! You can visit the Kellogg Family Rewards site for full promotional details here, as well as find a full list of products included in the promotion.
From breakfast until dinner, from sun-up to sun-down, from the playroom to the bedroom, books are opened, loved, and appreciated in our home.
I will never tell my daughters they aren’t allowed to read a book. For years I’ve lost myself, as well as found myself, in literature. Books can take us to places we may only ever dream to visit and ignite our imaginations in impossible ways. Make sure you’re inspiring your children to read and encouraging literacy in your home too!

Did not know of this program. Wish ads on tv would share these kinds of messages instead of just selling products. Will sign up for my grandchildren!
