Big Sister Cards by Bump Mail

In preparing Annabelle for her new role as big sister, we explored a couple of different ideas. One of my favorites was the use of Big Sister Cards by Bump Mail. Big Sister Cards are a series of 8 handmade cards that you can give to your little girl corresponding with months 3-9 of pregnancy. The set also includes an extra card for the day baby arrives saying, “Today I am going to be a BIG Sister.”

Since I didn’t find Bump Mail until later in my pregnancy, Annabelle only had a couple of cards to open. She loved receiving a big envelope in the mail with her name on it! We would read the card together and then color the pictures inside. The best card she received was opened in the hospital – right next to her new baby sister!

Bump Mail no longer carries big sister and big brother cards, but you could create these on your own. The front of each card is a pregnant Mommy with a lift-the-flap growing belly. When BIG Sister “opens” Mommy’s belly, the baby inside is revealed. Inside of each card is a letter written to the BIG sister from her little sister or brother to be. These letters are a way to develop a relationship between BIG sister and the little one before the baby is even born.

Each card reads like a children’s book, filled with relatable information about how the baby is growing and developing. Example: your baby brother/sister is as big as a soccer ball! Each page also contains at least one coloring-book-style drawing for BIG sister to complete.

I think preparing Annabelle for being a Big Sister really helped our transition from a family of three to a family of four. Annabelle wasn’t wondering how her life would change as much as she may have had we not discussed my pregnancy. Big sister is still adjusting to sharing the attention of the world with someone else, but she loves her little sister oh so much.
