My family and I are just a few months away from celebrating a big milestone: the purchase of our home in Connecticut. We will have spent 365 days making memories in our forever home and 12 months paying off only one out of 30 years on our mortgage. Do you ever stop and think, what happens to a mortgage if Brandon or I were to pass away unexpectedly? Would our daughters be responsible to pay for the home? Scary thoughts… all pointing to why we have life insurance (and you should too!)
Do you think life insurance is necessary?
Six years ago when Brandon and I found out we were pregnant with Annabelle, my father-in-law insisted we purchase life insurance. I wasn’t planning on dying anytime soon, so I didn’t understand why I would need it. Then one day I heard a devastating story: A woman died during childbirth, leaving her husband penniless post service costs with a tiny newborn. I didn’t want to imagine my husband in those shoes, but it had to be done. Suddenly, my father-in-law’s insistence on life insurance made sense.

Before we purchased our home last summer, we spent a year living with my family. We are forever grateful my parents let us live with them rent-free. However, we quickly spent every extra penny saved after we bought the house. It can cost a lot to transform a house into a home. From paint colors to subway shower tile, from a new bedroom set to the most beautiful pink playroom rug, our home is very much a symbol of us. A lot of our sweat and love was put into every inch of the house. I cannot imagine all that we worked for to be gone if one of us (or both of us) were to suddenly pass away.
To protect your children or spouse from living in debt, I truly believe its necessary to get life insurance. Life is too unpredictable to not be prepared for a sudden death. Brandon and I are now comforted knowing our life insurance policies will protect our daughters from any sudden debt.

Thank you for sharing this post. When my wife and I planned for the future, we always thought she’d live to be 85 like everyone in her family and I would die young. (My mom died at 52). We had life insurance for me but not for her. When my wife became the first person in her family EVER to have cancer, it came as a shock. When we found out weeks later that she had less than 6 months to live, we were stunned. We never planned for this and I wish we had. I’m so glad you and your family made better plans than we did. ♥️
