Working at home can be both a privilege and a curse. There are days when my productivity levels are extremely high and others when I barely get anything done. I’ve chatted with a few fellow WAHP (work-at-home-parents) and gathered their tips for working at home. Collectively we all agree on one thing – working at home with kids isn’t as easy as it looks!
Get Started Early
If you have the opportunity to get started on your work day at home early, make sure you jump at the chance! I find that I am most productive before my kids wake up and start barking orders. My husband is the same way on the days he works from home – he will sneak off to his computer while it’s still dark to answer emails in peace.
Stay Focused with a To Do List and Planner
The best way to stay focused is by having a list of everything that needs to be done for the day – and actually crossing out tasks as you complete them! I have To Do lists everywhere, but they help me stay organized. My planner is always open so I never miss a deadline or appointment (which I can’t pretend has never happened before).
Allow Distractions in Moderation
If you completely ignore everyone and everything in your house during the ‘work week,’ no one will be happy when Saturday rolls around. In my home, I’m the care provider for my children during the day so I can’t call them distractions. If they need me – I go to them. The way that I work from home is that I carve out time for my blog when they’re busy playing/napping! I avoid laundry/dishes/etc. for a few hours and push through my To Do list. Once my blog work is complete, I tackle chores around the house and make any phone calls at that time.
Create a Designated Work Space
Just because you are not actually going into an office doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have the same set-up while working from home. A designated work space should have somewhere to sit, type, and a door you can close when you need a little bit of privacy.
