Raise your hand if you love chicken and live in Connecticut? The most delicious chicken sandwich I’ve ever had is made at Roost in Hamden, a new fast casual restaurant with dine-in and to-go options. Last week I visited Roost with a handful of Connecticut bloggers to try out their menu. Their signage doesn’t lie – Roost is Cluckin’ Good!
Roost Kitchen is a must-visit restaurant because of the unique way they prepare their chicken. Roost cooks their fresh chicken sous vide, a French technique that leaves the meat tender and juicy. The chicken is then breaded in a gluten free, rice flour based Roost rub and fried in soy bean oil, which results in a crispy outside and moist inside.
Upon entering Roost, you can’t miss the giant menu on the wall. It’s filled with things like handheld sandwiches, fried chicken tenders/thighs/wings, bowls with optional grilled or fried chicken, snacks, ice cream milkshakes, and kids options. They even have beer and wine on tap! Some of you may be reading this and thinking, “but chicken isn’t my thing!” Not to worry, Roost is able to make most of their bowls and salads vegan-friendly!
What’s a handheld!?
Roost’s sandwiches are the perfect size to be held in your hand and eaten. They arrive in a paper sack, ready to be devoured. There are a variety of Handhelds on the menu that differ from their signature Super Chicken Handheld (Fried Chicken, Pickles, Roost Sauce, Potato Bun). The K-POP CHICKEN is a Korean Fried Chicken Thigh, Napa Slaw, and Spicy Korean Ketchup served on a Potato Bun. The COWBOY CLUB is BBQ Pork Rib, Cheddar Cheese, Pickles, and Ranch on a Potato Bun.
Roost Has Something for EVERYONE
From the hand cut street fries topped with bacon to the Veggie Burger, from the Cap’n Crunch Peanut Butter milkshake to the Kale Caesar Salad, there is something for everyone, even non-chicken fans. The Kale Caesar Salad is out of this world! Another personal favorite is the Chikn’ Bowl: Korean Fried Chicken Thigh, Spicy Korean Ketchup, Sesame Seeds, Napa Cabbage, Broccoli, Edamame, Pickled Carrot, and Sesame Ginger Dressing.
Is Roost Family Friendly?
If you want to visit Roost with the whole family, they welcome diners of all ages. There is free wi-fi and a pool table, plus a kids menu. The Kids Menu is short but sweet, with a choice of chicken tenders or a grilled cheese with apple slices, juice box, and soft serve ice cream. In addition to a great menu, Roost has gluten free and vegan options. Any of their buns can be swapped out for a gluten free one, and most of their bowls and salads can be made vegan if needed!
Next time you’re craving a juicy chicken sandwich, or perhaps fries and a shake, head to Roost in Hamden, CT. I’m excited to bring the girls along on my next trip and REALLY looking forward to the warmer weather so we can enjoy the outside patio!
