Ailey started noticing the food on our plates a lot sooner than her big sister. Around four months old, I knew that I could start her on oatmeal mixed with my milk. Unfortunately, much to her dismay, Ailey’s digestive system was still a bit immature, so we quit food until she turned six months old. Now that she is eating two-three times a day, I wanted to share my favorite feeding essentials for infants (and toddlers too!).
The Bib
Since we are on our second baby, I feel I have tried my fair share of bibs for feeding. Some people like bibs because they are easily washable plastic or repel food, but my absolute favorite bibs are neither. The cotton muslin Burpy Bibs by Aden + Anais are amazing for so many reasons. They are huge and wearable with a snap in the back, they get softer with each wash, and they don’t scratch baby’s face if you need to wipe her mid-feeding. My toddler can even wear the Burpy Bib when she is eating something extremely messy (like soup).
The Utensils
Feeding tools are another item that I feel I’ve experimented quite a bit with. I cannot believe I did not know about Boon Squirt Baby Food Dispensing Spoon with Annabelle – especially since she was a huge fan of pureed foods for such a long time. All you do is pour your baby’s favorite food in the silicone tube and screw on the spoon top. It’s easy to feed your baby one handed and only one bite squirts out at a time. Ailey couldn’t get enough peaches and wanted to hold the spoon herself.
Boon Squirt Baby Food Dispensing Spoon
Speaking of holding spoons herself, Ailey loves Num Num Dips, which is the first step to self-feeding. I don’t think she is quite ready to take charge of lunchtime, but she sure loves to attempt to feed herself. While promoting independence (which she thinks she already has), she can also soothe her sore gums.
Sometimes your little one is going to have more than one kind of baby food on her plate – in that case, the any one of these spoons are perfect. There is both a soft end and a rigid end for particular babies and a flat edge so you can wipe extra food off of her chin.
Bowls and Plates
Quite possibly one of the most ingenious baby feeding items I’ve discovered are the suction bowls. These 100% food grade silicone dishes are dishwasher, microwave and oven safe (up to 350 degrees). The dishes suction to the high chair so your baby can’t toss her plated dinner across the kitchen.
They have three compartments to remind Mommy to give baby a protein, carbohydrate, and veggie, while the EZPZ Happy Bowl has a wide enough area for finger foods as well as whatever you want to put in the bowl. Ailey loves to eat oatmeal from her bowl.
Cleaning Supplies
You can’t forget the drying rack that every Mom needs – the Boon Lawn Counter Top Drying Rack. The two piece drying rack holds everything from bottles to cups to bowls. It is easy to wash and so adorable, plus Boon makes cute accessories to really maximize as much drying space as possible.
