Mother’s Day is an extra special day this year in my life as it is the first in 8 years I will be able to spend with my own Mother. I’ve lived over 900 miles away for the last 12 years, and my parents have recently opened their home to my family so we could live with them after we relocated and need to house hunt. My Mother is one of the most remarkable women I have ever met, as she puts her family first and never ceases to amaze us with her selflessness.

For this Mother’s Day, give your Mom the best ‘present’ she could ever ask for – BE PRESENT. Here are three ways to be present this Mother’s Day.

1) Turn off your phone!

It is incredible how distracting a phone can be – from social media to text messages to email, there are a million reasons to absentmindedly pick up your phone and forget it is your Mom’s special day.

2) Ask your Mom personal questions.

My own Mother tells me constantly that she wishes she asked her Mom more personal questions before she passed away, so I take every chance I can get to hear my Mom’s life stories. Tell your Mom you want to hear all about her childhood/favorite day ever/etc.

3) Show your Mom some affection.

Whether its a hand squeeze, a hug, or even just uninterrupted eye contact while she is talking, don’t forget to show the woman who brought you into this world that you love her. A little bit of affection goes a long way and for some reason, the older we grow, the less we hug one another.
