Sharing a little life lately update with what we have been doing during May in 2025 on Caitlin Houston Blog.
Life Lately / May 2025
May is always a big month in our household. We celebrate Mother’s Day, the closing of the school year, Brandon and my sister/her husband/nephew’s birthdays, Memorial Day, and the pool opening… just to name a few. This May 2025 we also attended the girls’ dance competition, I kicked off my photography business season, and we celebrated Ailey’s first communion.

My middle child’s first communion was a gorgeous special day with Ailey looking like a stunning angel. She requested a charcuterie and trifle cake for the post-communion party at my parent’s house. We also served her favorites, penne alla vodka, fettuccine alfredo, stuffed breads and chicken cutlets, from Fratelli’s, a local Italian restaurant. Unfortunately Arbor woke up with a fever, so Brandon could only come to the church ceremony and Arbor never got to wear the “beautiful dress” we bought for the occasion.
With so many events happening in May, the weekends seem to blend together and I try not to spin out by June. One way to slow down is to step into nature – I went outside with Arbor as much as possible, but the high pollen count and wild weather did not make it easy. At the start of the month we had a few hot days, making me worry we were skipping over spring – but the heat was soon shut down by many cold, often rainy days. I never thought I would see Connecticut residents wearing winter coats during May, but it happened in 2025!
Memorial Day Weekend fell on the chilliest May 24-26 we may have ever seen. I gathered with family and friends for my sister’s birthday at her house, went to the town parade, and also helped organize two cookouts with our neighborhood crew. One would think 50 degrees is too cold to swim, but the OWA kids did not miss out on their annual tradition of jumping in the pool. While the children froze, the Moms made delicious Popsicle Prosecco drinks.

Here are a few more fun moments from this month: feeding the pig at Farmer Joe’s, a Zoo field trip with Ailey, Friday dinner at our favorite Christo’s (with Christo!), and shopping at CT Produce. Plus new chrome nails, a homemade watercolor birthday card, snaps from Annabelle’s fifth grade Photography Club Auction and her West Side Choral Concert. Lastly we can’t forget my nephew’s senior prom and a little landscaping project.
What I am Reading, Watching, and Wearing
Wondering what I am reading, watching, and wearing this month? Here is a round up of more life lately moments.
What I’m Reading
- Read: A Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas (Throne of Glass Book #7)
- After dragging it out for weeks, I finally finished the final book in Throne of Glass (TOG) series by Sarah J Maas. I am deeply depressed it is over. A few friends said I would enjoy TOG better than A Court of Thorns and Roses – they were correct. I found the Throne of Glass characters and storyline to be much more elaborate and enjoyable. I found myself so woven into the compelling plot it seeped into my dreams. One can only hope this series based on an incredibly strong willed female heroine (and her powerhouse female friends) will be developed into a movie someday.
- Read: Glow of the Everflame by Penn Cole (Kindred’s Curse Saga #2)
- Need an easy listening Romantasy series? Try this. The second book in the Kindred’s Curse Saga fell in line with the first – it’s entertaining and easy to follow while folding clothes or cooking dinner. Penn Cole’s character development is not as intricate, nor is the plot as compelling or complex as that of Sarah J Maas. However, the saga is still a compelling story of a female protagonist coming into her own with a little bit of love on the side.
- Reading: Heat of the Everflame by Penn Cole (Kindred’s Curse Saga #3)
- The third book in the series is by far the most exciting, but there are still some bumps in the plot road. I’ve come to learn Cole often makes very important plot details clear to the reader, but drags out the discovery by the characters. And that’s why I don’t give the Kindred Curse Saga anything more than four stars (and barely 4 at that).
- About to Read: Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins … I just can’t open it yet because I’m still sad about the conclusion of the TOG series.
- Follow me on Goodreads to see my book reviews and what I’m reading next.
What I Watched in May
- Sirens on Netflix – LOVE. Please tell me there will be a Season 2.
- Etoile on Prime – Not loving this ballet dramedy, couldn’t get into it.
- My Fault London on Prime – Steamy, entertaining romance (with some Fast Furious moments)
- The Buccaneers on Prime – Bridgerton vibes, so fun, can’t wait for Season 2
- Bet on Netflix – Currently watching and enjoying this YA ‘bad kid’ prep school show with gambling and mischief
What I Wore in May
Not really sure why I often make such a weird face, but selfies have never been my thing.
- Outfit 1 – Mother’s Day
- Outfit 2 – This sweatshirt and this set for errands
- Outfit 3 – Outdoor Birthday Party (cold and gloomy day)

What’s Coming Up…
May isn’t exactly over – and we still have Brandon’s birthday to celebrate! It’s the last week of dance classes before the big recital in June too. There are so many end of fifth grade and second grade events at the schools, plus graduation and moving up ceremonies. I don’t want to rush to the last day of school but it is all so much (and every other night!). We have a very busy June ahead of us, so here is to making the last few days of May count.
