Play is essential for a young child’s development because it contributes to their cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being. The average attention span of a 2-year-old falls between 4 and 6 minutes and that bumps to 6 and 8 minutes for 3-year-olds. That means, most toddlers can play on their own for short periods of time, but they require support and encouragement from a grownup to stick with an activity for longer. - Various size cardboard boxes – endless fun can be had with a box and crayon (under supervision)
- A bag with handles – who wants to play store? Let’s go shopping in the kitchen!
- Water – this is not just for hydration, water play is amazing (bonus if you have many buckets)
- Various kitchen items for water play – strainer, measuring cups, ladle
- Cooking pot with lid and wooden spoon – this is how all drummers start out
- A blanket + couch cushions/pillows – building a fort is so much fun
- Leftover cardboard roll from toilet paper or paper towel – is it a telescope or a megaphone?
- Whole vegetables – Arbor won’t tell me why baking potatoes are such a good time
- Egg crate or ice cube tray + snacks/toys
- Solo cups – stack them, fill them, throw them
