I am no longer breastfeeding my 22 month old – and she is doing great!
All About Our 22 Month Old
Our 22 month old baby (yes I still call her a baby) is full of energy. She loves to give kisses and ask for huggies. She likes to hide in my shirt or pillows on the couch, sing songs, and give her opinion. I say she wakes each day with a secret agenda and full schedule. Arbor is very curious about the world, often asking, “What’s that noise?” I absolutely love her genuine desire to know everything about her world and her ability to absorb new information like a sponge. She is fascinated by the garbage man (which she says very clearly) and anyone mowing their lawn.
At 22 months old, Arbor enjoys her independence but also asks, “Help please” when needs it. I’ve noticed her fearlessness is fading as she is learning cause and effect. For example, the playground slide is “scary” and will no longer go down it with ease after getting shocked one day. Arbor is still in a “Pick me up” phase if I am trying to do something that needs two hands. I think she likes to be in my arms, but is also curious as to what I am doing.
Arbor loves to play, especially with her sisters. She enjoys playing imaginary kitchen and baby dolls (especially with Ailey) or silly games with Annabelle. She is becoming more into independent play which is very helpful during the days we are alone together. Arbor plays well with others, gravitating towards kids in any situation whether she knows them or not.
Arbor adores her big sisters and sometimes cries when they leave for dance or school. She asks to go to school or to go to dance every other day – I think she will start a dance class when she turns two!
22 Month Old Behavior
Tantrums – Even though Arbor is able to say a lot more, she still becomes frustrated when she can’t have what she wants. It’s hard to not laugh when she angrily stomps her little foot or says, “Mommy PLEASE” if you don’t let her do something (usually a naughty something). If she starts a tantrum – usually a slow, loud roll on the floor – we allow her to let out her feelings safely. It rarely lasts long and she can often be distracted away from the tantrum by knocking on the wall and saying, “What was that?!”
Biting and Hitting – We have slowly moved away from this behavior as a response to frustration. The last time Arbor tried to bite one of her sisters they reminded her to “be nice” and she stopped. I’m happy she is starting to understand how to use her hands and teeth appropriately (haha).
Separation Anxiety – I was so nervous to leave Arbor with her Nana from Tennessee when Brandon and I went to Las Vegas for four nights. She doesn’t see her often and usually gives her an attitude when she is around her. It’s like she knows her Nana loves her more than anything so she gives her a hard time on purpose. But Arbor surprised everyone when she was best friends with Nana while we were gone. The second I walked in the door though – she was attached to my leg again.
Arbor’s 22 Month Old Milestones
Developmental milestones are tricky because not every baby hits the them at the same time. With that being said, I have always viewed my child’s development on a broad scale. If other toddlers are doing things she is not doing, and the pediatrician says we are on track – I’m not worried!
Arbor prefers to run instead of walk, but is learning to hold your hand if she is close to the street (finally!). She can kick a ball on the ground and pretends to throw the basketball in our hoop. Arbor cannot touch the pedals on her 3-in-1 Trike but really wants to move on her own so she propels herself using her feet on the ground. I hope Santa brings her a balance bike for Christmas.
Arbor can color with chalk/crayons/markers on paper or any flat surface (even herself). She can identify a few colors: yellow, blue, white, and pink. She is trying to blow bubbles outside and can blow water bubbles in the bath. She likes to help us get her dressed and learned how to step into her Crocs on her own.
What does our 22 month old say?
Arbor is rarely quiet – mostly when she is watching a show or asleep. She babbles all day long and becoming more understandable every day. We lost count of how many words she could say months ago. Arbor talks in sentences, and often says, “Please” and “Thank you.” She likes to change the words to songs she knows or sing the actual song into a microphone. She’s been known to try to ask “Echo” or “Alexa” to play a song too.
22 Month Old Favorites
Favorite Foods: Fruit snacks, beans and rice, “No-No” (donuts), “Cold aki” (popsicles), “bowl of milk” (cereal), scrambled eggs with ketchup, “hot chicken and french fries,” “ice cold juice” (juice box or iced seltzer + splash of juice), whatever I am eating, berries, Ritos (Doritos) and Bitos (Cheetos). I finally got her to eat pasta noodles – rotini in chicken noodle soup.
Favorite Books: She is always switching up her favorite books – which is great because we have a lot of books in the house. We are reading lots of fall/Halloween board books lately like “Boo Baa La La La.”
Favorite Songs: She LOVES to sing and sounds like she might just be able to carry a tune (unlike her Mama). Some favorites: “Come on ride the bus – hey!” “Baby Shark” “I’m in love with you” by The 1975
Favorite Things to Do: Draw “baby shark” on the wall/cabinet/window, read books (or just pull them off the shelves), put people on the big school bus and push it around the house, play with the Bluey set, take care of her baby dolls (big sisters are teaching her all the tricks, color or draw, play hide and seek, ride the pony carriage
Things Arbor Does Not Like at 22 Months Old
Foods she does NOT like: We are in the pickiest food stage yet with Arbor. She says, “No” to anything creamy, pasta with red sauce, sandwiches/wraps (unless I’m eating one, then she wants a huge bite). Typically every day a new food will result in “NO” and get tossed on the floor.
Things she does NOT like to do: Arbor does not like to be told, “No” and now says, “Mommy PLEASE” if she is told she cannot do something.
Arbor’s Favorite Things: Bib // Plate // High Chair // Playhouse
22 Month Old Daily Schedule
6:00/6:30am Wake-up: Arbor wakes up on her own anywhere from 5:30 – 6:30am every morning. She slept until 7am while we were away of course. She usually plays in her crib until we go get her. I follow the same routine when I enter the room: turn on lights and open the shades, turn off sound machine, remove her sleep sack in her crib and finally change her diaper.
6:30/7:00am Breakfast
8:30/9:00am Snack (let’s be honest though, she snacks ALL day)
10:45am Lunch
11:30am – 1:15/1:30pm NAP: Ideally she is to nap from 11-2, but that rarely happens. We have tried a 12 o’clock nap time, but she still wakes up by 1:45.
1:45pm/3:45pm Lots of Snacks in between lots of playtime
4:30pm Dinner (she eats an early dinner with her sisters)
5:30pm BATH Arbor loves tubby time, especially with Ailey and playing Tubby in the Dark with glow in the dark toys.
6:00-6:30 Bedtime Routine: Post bath lotion/eczema cream + hairbrush, PJs, play in bedroom, read books, close shades, put on sleep sack, turn on sound machine, sing bedtime song, lay down in crib awake. She asks to sleep with her monkey (Eee Eee), bunny (Hop), puppy, and Mr. Fox. She cuddles Eee Eee in the crook of her arm most nights. Arbor sleeps the whole night!
