Routine is key when trying to break bad habits. Every morning I do the same thing – wake up way too early with Ailey, groggily check my computer, chug my coffee, and then inhale some form of food for breakfast in between chasing around my older daughter before we have to leave for school. By lunchtime I’m groggy again, hungry, and usually a crabby. I’ve consciously decided I need a new routine since 2018 is my year to make some changes. Here are three smart ways to start the day.
one. stretch.
After sleeping with a 17 month old nestled in my armpit for 5 hours, it’s important that I stretch to get out the kinks. Taking the time to truly stretch your body every morning is a great way to improve circulation and increase blood flow to your muscles. The increased flow of blood creates energy that’s necessary for chasing around little ones and trying to work all day.
two. refuel.
Before I chug my first cup of coffee, I’ve started drinking a glass of lemon water. Drinking any kind of water first thing in the morning flushes the digestive system and rehydrates the body. Plus, lemon juice is a lovely additive filled with nutrients. I never have ice cold water (as it shocks your system instead of helping it), so I usually add a little bit of warm water to my glass if the tap water is on the cool side.
three. make smart breakfast choices.
Now that I’m done breastfeeding my daughter and over 1.5 years postpartum, it’s time I get my act together. I’ve been stuffing my face with whatever I can find in the morning, like cookies because they’re easy to eat, and I need to make healthier choices.
I believe my day will start so much better if I take the time to make a more fulfilling breakfast. It is so important that I eat something substantial in the morning and not my daughter’s leftovers. I’ve been working on my morning routine too! My naturopath wants me to drink a glass of Sole Water first thing every morning! It’s supposed to help with Adrenal Fatigue & getting the body detoxing first thing. I’m also working on adding protein to my breakfast in the mornings… it doesn’t always work, but I’m trying!

I really need to get better at drinking more water. It’s so easy to reach for coffee first, but I know a glass of water would do wonders!
