Some mornings begin quietly, with coffee, my journal, and a moment to breathe. Others begin with rushing, noise, and a to-do list already yelling my name. No matter how the day starts, I’ve learned that setting a daily intention and repeating simple affirmations helps me feel more grounded, focused, and calm—especially when life feels overwhelming.
This practice isn’t about toxic positivity or pretending everything is perfect. It’s about choosing how I want to show up for the day ahead.
Intentions vs. Affirmations (And Why I Use Both)
An intention is a gentle direction—how you want to move through your day.
An affirmation is a reminder—what you want to believe, even if it feels shaky at first.
I use intentions to guide my actions and affirmations to steady my mindset. Together, they help me reset when my thoughts spiral or when the day doesn’t go as planned.I believe in the power of starting each day with intention and positivity – even if I wake up in a bad mood.
How I Use Daily Intentions and Affirmations
Over the last few years, I have collected daily intentions and affirmations that transform my mindset and help me stay grounded, focused, and motivated. These simple yet powerful practices have become an integral part of my morning routine, guiding me through life’s ups and downs with a sense of purpose and gratitude.
There’s no rigid routine here. Some days I write them in a journal. Some days I say them quietly in the shower. Other days I repeat one line in my head while driving or folding laundry.
If you’re new to this, start small:
- Choose one intention for the day
- Choose one affirmation that feels comforting or empowering
- Repeat it whenever you feel stressed, rushed, or discouraged
That’s it.

Many of my most loved daily affirmations are from Journey to the Heart by Melodie Beattie. I have read the book daily, on and off or as needed, since 2020. Over the last two months I have incorporated a Wellness Journal into my routine, recording my morning intentions and reflecting on my mood/energy/etc. Setting intentions or repeating affirmations have become a key part of my day, helping me navigate life’s challenges with a sense of direction and appreciation.

You don’t need a perfect morning routine to set an intention. You don’t need silence, candles, or extra time. All you need is a moment to pause and remind yourself who you are and how you want to feel.
That moment counts.
