Sharing a little life lately update with what we have been doing and what will be up to during August in 2024 on Caitlin Houston Blog.
Life Lately – August 2024
Every year, as soon as Ailey’s birthday is over, I feel like summer is coming to an end. Our annual Cape Cod and Florida vacations are usually complete and the first day of school is sooner than later. The family is ready for routine and structure after weeks of late bedtimes and popsicles for breakfast. Arbor and I are going to have a hard time with her sisters gone during the day. They’ve been a great help not just playing with Arbor all summer, but also great company for me too!
I have always enjoyed celebrating our summer girl because Ailey’s birthday parties are extra. This year Ailey had a fashion themed art party at our favorite spot in town: Splat Art Studio. The owner, Kate, executed a most spectacular evening of painting and fabulousness dreamt up by the birthday girl herself. It’s hard to believe Ailey is 8 years old!
What else is going on this August? We started school shopping, but most of it has been done from the couch. The girls loved going to the mall last year but I was told in-store selections are slim so we opted for on-line. Despite the overwhelming presence of everything wide leg, my daughters are happy to see low-rise/slim fit jeans have made a comeback. They’re also loving Nike sneakers, pleated skirts, and plain t-shirts. I enjoy seeing their personal styles evolve – Annabelle is basic and casual while Ailey is coordinated and fancy.
What I’m Reading in August 2024
ACOTAR – I read all five books in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas in a few weeks. It was by far the best series I have ever read! It reminds me of a cross between Hunger Games and Twilight with a little bit of Game of Thrones mixed in. I HIGHLY recommend!
Crescent City by Sarah J. Maas – I am slowly reading the first book of another Maas series. It is not as compelling as ACOTAR so far. I’m having trouble getting into it because the point of view keeps changing and the names of all the characters are complex. I hope to find myself falling into it sooner than later though.
What I’m Watching in August 2024
- House of Dragons – this series is so good but I’m sad it’s over for now
- Rewatching Game of Thrones to try to make connections to House of Dragons
- A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder – binge watched this series while I was sick – VERY good and comes from a book series
- Rewatching The Summer I Turned Pretty because it’s the best summer show
- Emily in Paris – Season 4 Part 1 – I’ve always liked this show, but notice I’m not as into it as I was the first two seasons. I feel like the plot line is always predictable!
- Presumed Innocent – After hearing a lot about this limited series on AppleTV from family/friends, I decided to watch it. Three episodes in and I predicted something that just happened… we shall see if I solve the crime before the finale.
What I Am Buying in August 2024
- The best sunscreen for lips
- The only way to keep fruit flies out of the kitchen
- This stunning red dress
- Casual summer/beach shorts (doubles as athletic shorts)
My Fall/Birthday Wish List
Thinking back on everything I wished I had last year, I finally put together a fall wish list. My birthday is next month, so I hope to secure a few items!
- Loafers – I am HERE for the socks/loafers trend, especially when it comes to fall skirts, pleated skirts or shorts. I have a few pairs of loafers, but none of them are sturdy enough for socks. I love the classic tassel on this pair in black and the heel on this smooth leather loafer.
- A New Longchamp – THEY’RE BACK! I’m so happy I saved all of my Longchamp purses because they’re trending for this fall/winter. I love this smaller pouch with long strap for going out and this leather crossbody for everyday/running errands.
- Gold Square Toe Ballet Flats – Another item I’ve always loved (ballet flats) are so loved this year, I just don’t own a gold pair. I like this distressed gold pair.
- Lace Trim Slip Skirt in Black – I’m almost positive I had a similar skirt in maroon and wore it to Homecoming in 2001.
