Apparently our cat, Mcmuffin, thinks that everything we’ve brought into the house for Annabelle is a new present for him. I mean, what only child would think otherwise? We’ve done everything possible, including keeping the nursery door closed 24/7, to keep him out of/off of her things. HOWEVER, this does not stop him from finding ways to sneak into her stroller, hop onto her changing table, or snuggle in her blankets.
The best part about Muffin’s behavior is that he usually knows he is doing something wrong when he climbs on her things. Whenever I catch him, he closes his eyes to become invisible OR runs away and hides under our bed. Sometimes he even meow-yowls at me when I try to move him.
We don’t know how he will react when we bring Annabelle home from the hospital. He could think she is just another present for him to play with or he could take up permanent residence under our bed. If my Grandma were still alive, I know she would tell us to get rid of him. She always thought cats were evil and would suck the breathe out of your baby at night. I don’t worry about them growing older together – B and I have visions of Annabelle tossing Muffin over her shoulder as she waddles around the house. It’s just the introduction… and the first few months…that make me nervous.
So… is the first born furbaby going to get jealous?!
Or is he going to be a good big brother?
Have you ever brought a baby home to your pet?
How did your firstborn furbaby react?

I wish I could comment on this the way you would want an answer. We brought how two fur babies to our baby (so in opposite) when we were homing two huskies for a a few months. They were older and seemed really nice and gentle with our baby. But when it was time to move to Hawaii we had to let them go to another home. I always wondered if pets get jealous or if they adapt. I love seeing pets and kids growing up together which makes me sad we dont have one. Can you convince my husband that cats are awesome? 😉

We have 2 cats and 2 dogs. None of them really cared when we brought Harper home, but the cats LOVE to sit in all of Harpers things. Car seat, stroller, high chair, swing, crib, changing table, rocking chair, you name it. I guess it’s just a cat thing!

I can’t speak for cats, but Chip and Daisy do really well with the hellions in our neighborhood (the kids are obnoxious and loud!).

YES! Let me at him – he will love kitties after I tell him all about Muffin Man.

I know our fur baby will be stealing all of Maverick’s blankets – he steals ours now!! We keep a baby gate up at Mav’s door to keep him out for now and he doesn’t like when we are in there without him. Our first babies have a big change coming their way!

I have three fur babies – 2 dogs and a cat. 1 dog was like hm whatever, the other dog followed us around for about a month until he was like okay I guess it isn’t a chewie, and the cat wants absolutely nothing to do with her and hid for months. The cat is a little more use to her now but still avoids her, and stays out of the way until nap time or bed time. The dogs and her get along just fine now too. Almost a year btw.

The dogs love ER, but I would be lying if I said they are best friends for life. We have sorta neglected our dogs since her arrival, mostly because she came at the end of summer and they had fleas. We put them in quarantine and they’ve sorta been there ever since. Now that we have moved and she is bigger and walking, we plan on them being around each other more.

Oh my god, how cute. I have no advice or experiences to share but I’m looking forward to seeing this unfold. Cats with new toys, I mean babies! What could be cuter??

I secretly can’t wait to see the look on his face when he hears the baby scream… mwahahaha.

Aw I hope that we don’t neglect Muffin!! But if he had fleas – he’d be living in the laundry room!

This is crazy. I’ve heard of it but never actually seen it and I love that you captured it all on film! I hope and pray that he’ll be an awesome big brother!

I’ve said it a thousand times, if you have a pet first, and a kid second, a pet doesn’t or shouldn’t get pushed to the back burner just because a kid is now around. I’m a huge animal rights advocate and often butt heads with people on this issue. People have to think before they have kids about their fur children, who were there first ya know? 🙂

As I’ve mentioned, my one cat in particular is a lot like McMuffin (including the disdain for getting dressed up – we won’t even mention the debacle the Christmas card costumes were this year). She in particular is WONDERFUL with Jeremiah. All three of the are good with him. They’ll jump in his crib or pack n play with him (so obviously I supervise closely), but they never do anything but sit there and let him play/pull fur. The worst things that they’ve ever done intentionally is walk on his stomach (I mean, they walk on mine all the time, so I don’t think they get why they can’t walk on his). He’s also been scratched twice, but both times were accidents (like when I was trying to move a cat with one hand and hold a baby with another and I kind of dropped the cat onto the baby). There hasn’t been any aggression at all.
When we first brought him home, they were more curious than anything. I have some cute pictures of them examining him. But there has never been any hissing or anything.

Yes they won’t know what hit them! I wish I could prepare him… he was meowing outside her nursery the other day saying, “LET ME IN THEREEEEE”

Poor baby!! I talk to Murphy about the baby like he understands, ha!! I think they will both be great big fur brothers! 🙂
