All Dads deserve a day of celebration for all of their hard work. With Father’s Day right around the corner, what better time to find out some of the secret thoughts of some of the Dads in my life? I held a Father’s Day Q&A with my husband, Brandon, and my own Dad, Pat. Knowing their feelings and insights about being a Dad is helping me to better understand what it’s like to be a D-A-D.
Q: What is the best thing about being a Dad?
Pat: Watching my three children grow up over the years has been amazing. We had so much fun being silly when they were little and now, even as adults, we have fun together. The best part is my kids have kids now, too, and my grandchildren bring so much happiness (and silliness) to my life.
Brandon: Having someone to care about more than yourself. I love watching how they’re changing as they grow up—imitating us as parents but also having their own personalities. I have so much fun playing with them every day.
My Dad actually had a lot more to say about the first question regarding the fun we had when I was little. I now know what I can write in his Father’s Day greeting card this year, and that’s a list of our funniest memories together. I have always valued my relationship with him—how we can have serious talks one minute and silly, funny chats the next. Watching him play with my daughters is a testament to his playful personality and warms my heart so much.
Q: What is the scariest thing about being a Dad?
Pat: I’m always wondering if I’m doing the right thing—even now that my kids are grown.
Brandon: The unknown is always there, especially when you have a baby. Doctor’s appointments can be scary if there is something wrong—for example, Annabelle had to have ultrasounds on her hip sockets when she was just a few weeks old. And Ailey, we had no idea she was allergic to sesame and chickpeas until she went into anaphylactic shock at 9 months old.
Q: What kind of advice would you give to a new Dad?
Pat: Always lead by example. Your kids (and their kids) are going to watch your every move and try to be just like you, whether you want them to or not.
Brandon: Your life is about to change for the better!
Bonus: What is it like being a girl Dad?
Brandon: I didn’t have a little sister growing up, so I didn’t really know what to expect when we found out we were having a daughter. I learn something new every day—about clothes, hair, toys, etc.
This Father’s Day, my daughters and I want my Dad and Brandon to know how much we appreciate them. We will be writing them heartfelt cards with messages saying THANK YOU for always knowing how to have fun, always protecting us, and being such a supportive figure in our lives.

This Father’s Day, take a few moments to ask that special guy in your life some questions about being a Dad. It was interesting to hear my Dad and husband’s answers, and I am so happy that I now know what they truly think. I appreciate the role they play in my life (and my daughters’ lives) so much more now!
