Looking for the perfect beach getaway that’s family-friendly but still relaxing? Hilton Head Island checks every box. This Hilton Head travel guide will help you plan where to stay, eat, and explore—whether you’re traveling with kids, a partner, or friends.
This summer our family went on a new adventure to a place I hope we continue to visit every year. Hilton Head, South Carolina quickly won a special place in my heart for its beauty – from the Spanish moss and Lowcountry landscape to the white sandy beaches. We spent an incredible week with my husband’s parents and his brother’s family on the stunning island and already can’t wait to go back.

Hilton Head Island Travel Guide: Things to Do, Eat & Explore
Hilton Head Island is the perfect getaway for anyone looking to combine beautiful beaches, delicious food, and a relaxing atmosphere. Whether you’re traveling with family, friends, or as a couple, this charming island offers something for everyone. On our recent trip, we discovered why Hilton Head continues to be a top destination in the Southeast.
How to Get to Hilton Head
Flying to Hilton Head was a breeze thanks to Breeze Airways. Our direct flight from Hartford to Savannah/Hilton Head was almost hassle-free – both airports had technical difficulties unrelated to the airline.
Aside from the airport issues, the Breeze flight was fast, easy, and I would do it again ten times over. Booking during a flash sale scored us fantastic seats for half price, making it an easy and affordable travel option. Luggage and carry-on fees were included in our ticket price, as well as complimentary full-size snacks and beverages (alcohol too!).
Where to Stay in Hilton Head Island: Best Areas & Resorts
Hilton Head Island is divided into several resort areas and plantations, which are essentially planned or gated communities. These areas include Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, and Forest Beach, each offering unique characteristics and amenities. There are countless options for staying on Hilton Head, but my in-laws chose to rent a home in the Sea Pines area Sea Pines is not only family-friendly—it’s home to Harbour Town Golf Links, famous worldwide in the golfing community.
- Sea Pines (Best for Families & Golfers): Gated community, famous for Harbour Town Lighthouse, bike trails, golf, and family-friendly rentals.
- Palmetto Dunes (Best for Resorts & Beaches): Luxury resorts, world-class golf, tennis, and oceanfront vacation rentals.
- Forest Beach (Best for Nightlife & Central Location): Near Coligny Beach & Plaza, walkable restaurants, shopping, and bars.
- Other Options: Shipyard Plantation (quiet, mid-island), Shelter Cove (marina, dining, fireworks).

Sea Pines
We stayed at a vacation rental home in Sea Pines Resort, one of the most popular places to stay on Hilton Head Island. This gated community is known for its lush landscapes, miles of bike trails, and easy access to the beach. Sea Pines feels like it’s own little world – part nature preserve, part resort community – especially as you can only enter through a security gate.
Our family stayed in a four bedroom oceanside home with a private pool and private beach boardwalk. Renting a home on Hilton Head gave us plenty of space as a group of six adults and five children. The full kitchen, large dining area, and spacious living room was perfect for game nights and family dinner. Renting a home on vacation? Read what to bring here first!
One of the things I love most about the Sea Pines area are the miles of bike paths winding through moss-draped live oaks, lagoons, and marshes. Every morning I walked or ran for an hour – taking in the beautiful homes and looking for new animals. Wildlife is everywhere — herons, deer, even the occasional alligator. The Lawson Stables are easy to find, as are the horses, funky birds and waterfowl inhabiting the area.

Top Spots for Cocktails in Hilton Head
When the sun sets, Hilton Head’s bars and lounges come alive. We loved sipping oceanfront cocktails at the Ocean Lounge in Sea Pines and popping into Honey & Thistle for a charming wine tasting experience. Madre Social Kitchen & Bar offers a lively atmosphere perfect for an evening out, making it easy to unwind and enjoy the island vibes.
- Ocean Lounge – Sea Pines Resort – oceanfront 21+ – the most beautiful rooftop bar, catch live music from the restaurant below
- Jane Bistro and Bar – Shelter Cove – great cocktails (didn’t get to try the food) + stunning decor
- Honey & Thistle – Harbour Town – a charming spot at Sea Pines Resort to pop in for a wine tasting, adorable gift, or glass of something nice to go. The Mother-in-Law and Daughter-in-Law owners are beyond kind and so helpful!

Things to Do and See on Hilton Head
Beyond the beaches and eateries, Hilton Head has plenty to explore. Sadly we did not do as much exploring as we hoped due to the extreme heat wave during our visit. Most of our time was spent in the ocean and pool! If you are looking for things to do and see on Hilton Head, check these out:
- Harbour Town Lighthouse & Museum – Climb the iconic red-and-white striped lighthouse for panoramic views of Harbour Town and Calibogue Sound.
- Lawton Stables – Try horseback riding along scenic trails or take riding lessons at Lawton Stables in Sea Pines. We walked over to check out the horses and saw our first alligator in a pond nextdoor.
- Shopping at Harbour Town Shops or Shelter Cove Towne Centre– Boutiques and specialty stores offer everything from souvenirs to upscale clothing and art.
- Gregg Russell Harbour Town Playground – huge nature inspired playscape with a treehouse to climb, swings, slides, etc. in Harbour Town by the Bakery + Cafe. Our kids spent an hour here!
- Pirates of Hilton Head – Climb aboard the Black Sparrow as it sets sail for a thrilling one and a half hour journey that captivates pirates of all ages. We will definitely try it next time.
- The Sandbox Interactive Children’s Museum – What better way to spend a rainy day than with hands on interactive exhibits for kids? We will have to visit if it rains next time.
- Golfing at Sea Pines Resort – Home to three championship golf courses — Harbour Town Golf Links, Heron Point, and Atlantic Dunes — Sea Pines is a golfer’s paradise.
Tips for Traveling to Hilton Head with Family /Group
I highly recommend hiring a professional photographer for a mini family session on the beach – Camera Koala came to us and made magic of our wild and chaotic family!
Traveling with family means balancing activities and downtime, and Hilton Head makes it simple with its laid-back pace and family-friendly attractions.
- Rent bikes—best way to get around, especially with kids.
- Pack bug spray + sunscreen (mosquitos & sun are strong).
- Book restaurants early (Hilton Head gets crowded in summer).
- Bring or schedule to rent beach chairs/umbrellas if staying in a rental house.
- Check Plantation Access Fees: Many resort/plantation areas (like Sea Pines) require a gate fee per vehicle. Factor this into your budget if you plan to explore.
- Plan Downtime: The heat and humidity can be intense, especially for kids. Schedule pool time, naps, or indoor activities into your day.
- Consider Group Grocery Delivery: Services like Instacart or local grocers deliver directly to vacation rentals — a huge help for big families arriving late.
- Look for Free Entertainment: Shelter Cove Harbour has free summer fireworks and live music. Gregg Russell also hosts beloved family-friendly concerts in Harbour Town.
MOST IMPORTANT TIP: Don’t Skip Sunrise or Sunset. Both are breathtaking on Hilton Head and often less crowded than mid-day beach time — perfect for family photos.
