Pumpkin picking is a fall tradition loved by families all across America. Today I’m sharing snippers of our family’s beloved tradition, pumpkin picking.
I remember going with my Dad and sister to a farm near our house every year to pick out a pumpkin. We would bring the giant pumpkin home, watch my Dad draw a funny face on it, and we would gut it on newspapers on the dining room table. Then my sister and I would watch as my Dad carved out the face. Finally, we’d place a candle inside, turn out the lights, and admire our work.
Brandon and I picked our first pumpkin together in 2012. We had never bothered to buy real pumpkins because we always lived in an apartment and had no where to put it once it was carved.
In 2012 we found our pumpkin at a farm stand because there weren’t any real farms near our home in Maryland. The following year we went pumpkin picking at a real farm in Georgia. I was growing my own little pumpkin and we talked about how fun it would be to go as a family of three in the future.
Last year we spent our fifth wedding anniversary bringing our 10 month old to a pumpkin patch. We were SO excited for Annabelle to help us pick out a pumpkin. We actually went to the patch twice – once for a hayride and once for a pumpkin. Both times Annabelle was a little bit timid, but seemed to have fun. Clearly you can tell by her face in the photos…
Well this year was way more fun at the pumpkin patch. Annabelle is 22 months old now and had a ball. She talked about the pumpkins the whole way home from the patch and I have a feeling it isn’t the last we are going to hear about our trip. She found herself a tiny pumpkin to bring home and helped her Daddy pick out a big pumpkin for carving.
Every year we look forward to the traditions our family follows. Pumpkin picking is one our favorites (it ranks number 2 behind cutting down a Christmas Tree of course). Of course we’ve already talked about the day when we have another little one to help us pick out our annual family pumpkins – but for now, its just me, B, and our little Pumpkin Princess.
So adorable! My little girl is only seven weeks old, so too little for the pumpkin patch this year, but my husband and I are excited to take her next year, when she will most likely be toddling around!
What a sweet tradition! We never visited a pumpkin patch until last year when our son was a little over a year old. Now it’s a family tradition. Before then, my hubby and I would carve pumpkins that we picked up at Walmart.

I am from Maryland, and there are many wonderful farms around the Baltimore/Ellicott City area. I am sorry you never had an opportunity to see what a wonderful state you were living in.
