When we sold our house over the summer, we never anticipated that it would take as long as it has to buy a new home. My family and I have made a lot of changes – the biggest being our relocation to Connecticut and then moving in with my parents until we find our forever home. With the holidays approaching, there has been even more anxiety and stress about our situation. It’s hard enough that we’ve crashed into my parents’ lives, but not having our own place to decorate for my favorite time of the year was a little upsetting. Thankfully, my family is amazing, and we have been so happy to be together that it doesn’t matter where we are living at this time.
One positive aspect of our new living arrangements is that Annabelle and Ailey are spending a lot of time with their grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins. Since we’ve always lived in Georgia, we only visited with our family a couple of times a year. Now that we are in my parents’ house, the girls are playing with Noni and Py every day and running around with my sibling’s children multiples times a week.
With all of the anxiety and stress that comes with having a new home, I’m happy to say that we’ve been encouraging Annabelle to talk about her feelings. It’s definitely not easy to be somewhere different for the holidays. Annabelle has had so many questions about Santa being able to find us in a new place, but we’ve reassured her that he knows just where to go. We made sure to visit him at a few holiday events in town so that he knows she is here. Annabelle also wrote him a letter with her new address. When you’re somewhere new that’s temporary, it is important to make it feel a little bit like our own. We’ve changed up our bedding, hung our clothes in the closet, and even added a few personal pictures around the room where we sleep. I think having items from our last home around us make it easier for the girls to adapt to our digs. If you’re in a similar situation and and don’t have access to anything from your last house, with locations all across the globe, CORT Furniture Rental can help with quick and easy options to turn your new space into the place you call home.
What I’ve learned from our move is that its not where you are, but who you are with during the holiday season that matters. We are so grateful to have family and friends surrounding us, and even more thrilled to be able to enjoy this magical time of year with my sister’s new baby.
