As a stay at home mom of an infant and a toddler, I’m often either forgetting to eat or shoving whatever I can with one hand into my mouth. My diet consists of mostly carbs since they are easiest to eat, or whatever my almost three-year-old doesn’t finish on her plate. For example, last Monday I ate a piece of pizza crust for breakfast, a mini bag of pretzels for lunch, and a coffee and bagel for dinner. Since I am breastfeeding, I am aware that I need to make sure I’m putting enough calories in my body that are filling and nutritious, or I could have trouble producing the milk my baby needs to survive.
With Ailey, this is my second experience breastfeeding a baby. I know what will happen if I don’t consume enough sustainable calories in a day – my milk supply dwindles, I’m often tired, and I end up wasting away physically. With that being said, I also know what I need to do to make sure I am living a healthy lifestyle. Here is how to make sure as a breastfeeding Momma you take care of your body and consume enough calories to have necessary energy for Motherhood!
Step 1: Take your vitamins.
It is important you make sure you’re getting essential vitamins and minerals while breastfeeding. Most women can get all necessary nutrients from food if they’re eating a well-balanced diet, but as I previously stated, sometimes it is hard to do so being a busy Mom. A prenatal vitamin is a great source of the essential vitamins and minerals a woman needs.
Step 2: Stay hydrated.
Water is so important to all humans – but especially to a breastfeeding Mom. Make sure you drink enough water during the day to stay hydrated so you have enough energy to take care of your child(ren) and produce milk.
Step 3: Don’t forget to eat your veggies!
Motherhood can consume so much of your brain that you often forget to eat. If you add breastfeeding to the basic mommy responsibilities, you have even more on your mind. The key to eating right while breastfeeding is three well-balanced meals and frequent small snacks. I try to eat my veggies, but they aren’t the easiest to grab and go. If I am at home, one of the easiest and quickest meals can be found in my freezer by one of my favorite brands.
