Ahh, it feels so good knowing I made it through my first day of my third year teaching first grade without any serious glitches. I was definitely a bundle of nerves yesterday morning when I found out my shirt didn’t dry in the dryer overnight…and then I realized I’d forgotten to turn the kids nametags into necklaces… and then there was the fact that my classroom felt like the sauna at the gym. BUT I DID IT!
I kept my thoughts and emotions positive and made it through the day in one piece. Even when one of my new little chickadees crawled under his desk and started crying and trying to break a ruler on the leg of his desk after he got in trouble – I kept my cool. I guess all of those times that my kids went nuts last year helped prepare me for this year.
I did have to raise my voice a few times – but it was NOT raised in an out of control fashion– so I am right on track with keeping one of my goals for this year (which is obviously “not yelling like a maniac when the situation doesn’t call for a maniacal yell”). DAY ONE DOWN!
I also kept my promise to myself that I wouldn’t come home and sit right in front of the t.v. – no matter how exhausted I was feeling. I stayed at school later than I have in a year, so when I was on my way home, all I could think about was washing my yucky face and putting my feet up. However, another of my goals is to be more productive when I get home from school. So I cleaned the kitchen and emptied the dishwasher. Then I watched the finale of True Blood.
I must run off to finish some last minute planning before I have to leave for school – but I’ll leave you with some pictures I took over the summer while visiting my family in Connecticut that make me oh so happy.
Glad your first day went well!
YAY!! Glad you had an awesome first day. I just got home from mine and I’m pretty exhausted. I don’t have any energy to do anything, but I’m taking it easy today because, hey, it’s day 1. They are always a little bit more stressful than an average day.
